The crypto world is abuzz with a heated discussion surrounding Layer 3 (L3) networks. Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of Ethereum, is firmly stating his stance. Conversely, Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon, holds an opposing view. Let’s dive into this Layer 3 brouhaha and understand what these blockchain bigwigs have to say.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Buterin shared an article he had written about 1.5 years ago. The crux of his argument? L3 networks “don’t magically improve throughput.” He believes there are “lighter” ways to achieve the cost savings users seek from L3s.
Buterin cites data availability constraints as the primary reason L3s cannot offer exponential scaling. He explains, “Data can be compressed once, but it cannot be compressed again… Hence, ‘rollups on top of rollups’ cannot provide large gains in scalability.”
The Ethereum co-founder acknowledges that L3s could serve specialized functions, such as acting as data availability solutions or privacy-focused layers. However, he questions whether better alternatives emerge over time.
Boiron Counterargument: Protecting Ethereum Value
On the opposite side of the debate, Polygon’s Marc Boiron stirred the crypto community by stating, “L3s exist only to take value away from Ethereum and onto the L2s on which the L3s are built.”
When challenged that Layer 2s (L2s) “ARE value on Ethereum,” Boiron disagreed, saying, “If all L3s settled to one L2, then Ethereum would capture no value and, thus, Ethereum security would be at risk.”
Boiron’s concern stems from the belief that if L3s gain too much traction and value migrates away from Ethereum, it could undermine the security and value proposition of the Ethereum mainnet.
While the debate continues, some key players are already exploring the L3 ecosystem. Projects like Orbs, Xai, zkSync Hyperchains, and the recently launched Degen Chain on Arbitrum Orbit are building on L2 solutions. However, it’s important to note that this sector is still relatively small and nascent.
As the discussion continues, one thing is clear: the Layer 3 narrative has sparked intrigue and polarizing opinions within the crypto community. Only time will tell how this emerging technology evolves and whether it can address the scalability and cost challenges blockchain networks face.
